Where are you now?!?

Whenever I speak to my friend Gerry Mitchell, a fellow artist based in Charlottesville, VA, he tends to start the conversation "And where are you now?"

This year, my answers have been, Millersville (Pennsylvania,) Durham (New Hampshire,) Albany (NY,) New York City, Panama City (Panama,) Portobelo (Panama,) San Jose (Costa Rica,) San Diego (CA,) Fairfield (CA,) and now...

Cleveland and Marta

Greetings from the bay area!

Cleveland and I are in Oakland, CA.

Ohio

One of my favorite pieces, a tribute to Frida Khalo called "An altar of love and color" is being shown at the Doubting Thomas Gallery in Tremont, Cleveland, OH

It will be on display all month.

Honoring Janet Levi, Celebrating La Novena

In memory of my artist friend Janet Levi (1940-2009), and in celebration of my favorite restaurant, La Novena, I am now holding my third birthday exhibit. Whispered Confessions of a Self-Exiled Artist is on display throughout November at La Novena Restaurant in Panama.

Much of Clevland and I’s love story is set at this location:  The first time he heard my name and saw my work was in the restaurant.  I returned to Panama (and met him) because I was having a solo show at the restaurant.  We rented our first apartment above the restaurant.  The owners virtually adopted us, often calling Cleveland “sobrino.”  The idea to write my book, Beauty Unbalanced, was born in the restaurant.

It has been a special space for us, and many other creative souls.

My closing exhibit celebration, for Whispered Confessions of a Self-exiled artist, will be held November 26, 2009 at 7 p.m.

This exhibit was organized and hung by my talented artist friend Martanoemi Noriega and my momager Toni Williams-Sanchez.  It will be up all month.

La Novena is a great place to visit for a treat.  The exhibit celebration will be their last event.  Sadly, the restaurant will be closing it’s doors at the end of the month.

A New Super Star!

Cleveland was recently reflecting on how often men are portrayed as the sun, and women as the moon.  He found it problematic for men to be viewed as the active source of light, while women are viewed as passive reflectors.

His words rang true and thoughtful.  I found myself greatly relieved that Cleveland is my partner.

He is a different kind of sun.  He warms me without expecting me to revolve around him constantly.  This moon is brightened by his kind spirit and gentle heart.

And I am so excited that he and I, as we approach our third anniversary on November 28th, are also looking forward to the arrival of our newest family member, our Super Star, due April 2010.  We don't know if it we are awaiting a Luna or a Sol. A moon or a sun.  But we are certain that he or she will bring new light, and purpose, to our lives.
